Freelance WordPress developer, designer, consultant and fixer.
I design and build new WordPress websites, rebuild broken ones, improve existing sites, handle SEO and provide ongoing WordPress support.
I am a freelance WordPress expert based based in Oxfordshire who does all things WordPress.
With over 25 years of experience working on websites and 18 of those exclusively on WordPress, I know what I am doing.
In a nutshell:
- I design/redesign WordPress sites to high UX and accessibility standards, ensuring websites.
- I build custom WordPress sites that are optimised for Search Engines, Answer engines and conversions.
- I make content management easy so my clients can manage their own websites quickly and efficiently.
- I use a limited Set of Plugins and JavaScript to build lean websites that rank in the SERPs and are cited by AI.
- I use Schema to ensure that AI can understand site content and context.
- I fix WordPress issues – whatever the problem, I can get it sorted for you.
I work with all kinds of organisations – from sole traders to large public companies and to all kinds of budgets – I prefer to tell my client what I can do within their budget rather than what something should ‘cost’.
My WordPress services overview
WordPress website design
I design websites to drive conversions and new business. I’m an experienced designer who has also spent many years working on branding and print projects, so I have extensive experience in layout and UX.
I design simple websites that drive new leads, not pretty websites that achieve nothing.
Custom WordPress builds
I build WordPress sites that do what your business needs, rather than off-the-shelf themes that do 90% of what your business does not need. My sites are lean and optimised for both organic and AI search.
In short, I build effective marketing platforms that rank well on Google and are cited in AI searches.
Easy content management
If your site is too complex to use, you won’t use it, and that is not the point of having a website. I focus as much on making content management easy as I do on building optimised front-ends.
I build content blocks around your content requirements rather than expecting you to bend your content into generic content editing tools.
Limited plugins and lightweight code
You don’t need 100s of plugins, you need a developer who knows how to code. Many functions that plugins deliver can instead be accomplished more efficiently with short in-theme functions. This means the sites I build avoid bloat, too much unused CSS & JS – I don’t install what you don’t need.
Too many plugins on a WordPress site cause speed and security issues – I keep my sites fast and safe by writing proper code.
The sites I build are machine-readable
We are in a new era of search. More and more people are turning to AI answer engines like ChatGPT and Claude for recommendations. If AI can’t understand your site or how to crawl through too much bloated code, you simply will not get cited in AI searches.
The lean code and schema markup I bake into my sites help my clients surface in AI searches.
I am here to help
Above all, I help organisations improve their WordPress sites – this might be building a new site or improving an existing one – but I will give you a straight answer about how your site is potentially holding your business back.
Whatever stage your website is at, I can help you make it better, with the ultimate objective of improving your bottom line.
How do I help organisations improve their WordPress sites?
A website consists of many moving parts, so improving a WordPress site involves considering them all.
If you want more from your website, be that sales, members, donations or whatever, you can’t simply look at one aspect, for example, the design, and change that – you have to look at every aspect of your site and how it impacts getting the correct traffic and then converting that traffic.
Structure and planning
Failing to plan is planning to fail. Websites need to be structured for effective indexing and rankings. If your site is a mess, it won’t be found.
This doesn’t just mean your page URL structure – it means categories, tags, custom post types – everything should be considered.
Get this wrong, and your site can start building topic clusters that rank for the wrong queries.
Structure also takes into account what you put on each page, how this is semantically organised, whether you are using ARIA labels, schema and so on.
In short, you should spend more time planning your website than obsessing over what it looks like.
Design & User experience
There’s a very good chance your website looks fine overall. What most people do not realise is that whilst they endlessly fuss over design, a visitor makes a decision about it in 300 milliseconds.
Overall, you need to look professional and appropriate – anything outside of this is simply cake decoration.
Where you should invest time is in elements of your site, such as calls-to-action, forms, and so on: how do they work, are they obvious, and does the user understand what they need to do?
You will hear the term UX banded around a lot, but real UX needs extensive user testing and at least 5000 unique visitors per month to make any sense of the data – for most business websites, it’s really just a case of using best practices.
Built on a better WordPress theme
Never use an off-the-shelf theme or a page-builder plugin on your website. Firstly, these plugins are designed to do everything for everyone, which makes them bloated and slow.
Secondly, they are usually used by people who do not know how to code – is that what you want for your business’s primary marketing tool?
- Off-the-shelf themes (in general) pump out code soup that AI won’t wade through
- Page builder plugins do the same
- Too much code on your site means getting ranked or cited is more difficult
- Bloated sites load slowly
- Team this up with all the additional plugins you need to install to get the theme to do anything, and you are heading for a webshite
A better WordPress theme is one that starts with virtually nothing and is built around your business objectives. This means you get everything your business needs and nothing it doesn’t.
Custom themes are lean, optimisable and don’t break in six months’ time when you want to add some additional functionality, and when built around the core WordPress Codex, they are as future-proof as they can be.
Business savvy
A website is never just a website; it’s usually part of a wider marketing effort and often needs to integrate with a CRM or communicate with other systems via APIs or automations.
I don’t build a website then disappear – I help with integrating your website into your wider digital communications and business operations.
I have extensive experience with apps that integrate with your website, such as HubSpot, Zapier, API integrations, accounting tools, Replit, Lovable, Claude, Cloudflare, hosting, DNS, email, and so on.
I use this experience to help clients within the wider digital marketing landscape that is now evolving faster than ever due to AI.
A website is not a solo marketing tool – it’s a part of your wider business ecosystem, and this can be integrated, automated and optimised to convert more new business leads into paying customers.
I plan, design and build bespoke WordPress sites.
I do this for clients who want more growth from their sites.

Problems with an existing WordPress site? Get an objective, independent appraisal.
A WordPress site can be built in 1000s of different ways.
Free themes, Premium themes and bespoke-built themes all have their own pros and cons.
You may have lots of different plugins on your site or your developers may have built custom plugins and functionality – both routes also have their own challenges and benefits.
Knowing how your site is built is crucial.
If you don’t have a clear understanding of your site build and architecture it can result in expensive bills every time you ask your developers to do something.
It’s easy to make WordPress complicated.
One of the main benefits of using WordPress to build a site is to embrace the fact that lot’s of different functionality is out there all ready for you to use on your site.
There are 100s of free and premium plugins available to achieve complex functions.
Some agencies prefer to not use plugins – they write bespoke code when a plugin would have done the job perfectly.
On occasion, this can serve only to tie you into the agency rather than keeping your site open and accessible to other developers.

Get in touch with DaveNeed a WordPress designer? I’ve got that covered too.
As well as consulting and WordPress development, I am also an experienced designer.
I’ve worked across website design as well as branding and print work.
Whilst design is only one part of the process of putting together an effective WordPress website, it’s a pretty crucial element, so it pays to have an experienced designer on board.
WordPress makes it very easy for non-experienced designers to throw together WordPress sites – you can end up with a site that’s simply a theme they’ve coloured in.
I am also a huge advocate of user-focused design – that design is based on objectives, user experience and conversions rather than just making something look nice.

During this time, I’ve built hundreds of websites, solved thousands of WordPress problems, and worked on nearly every type of website you can imagine.
On top of my WordPress experience, I also run a business that generates all of its new leads via SEO, so I know the importance of getting found in the search, integrating your website with your marketing and tying everything into your bottom line.
I also integrate WordPress sites into other business processes and help to improve workflows and conversions.
This means in general, that I can help with a lot more than the average freelancer and add value to any project we work on together.
