How I work and
what I charge.

I have a simple approach to work and charges.

How I work.

For all new projects, I usually take a quick look at your site to see if I can help.

I don’t usually need to look at your WordPress admin for simple requests like tweaks to layouts or code, but for more complex requests, I will need access to check I can 100% help you before we do anything.

If I need access, I will let you know before I provide the cost of the work.

Once I have a good handle on what you want done, I will provide the cost of the work.

This is always an estimate, as some requests can turn into a bit of a rabbit hole, but I have worked on 100s of WordPress sites, so it’s not usually an issue.

I work in 30-minute blocks.

To keep costs in check, I work in 30-minute blocks.

If I have quoted a couple of hours for the work (for example), I will let you know when every 30 minutes is used with an update about what’s been done.

  • If I don’t need all the time, you can use any remaining time for something else.
  • If I need more time, I will let you know in advance.
  • I will let you know if there is an issue with the original request (for example, if something unforeseen occurs, such as an issue with your theme or hosting).
  • I never use more time than you have purchased without your approval.

I also need to ensure that before I do anything, you have a recent backup of your site.

This is usually provided by your hosting company. If you do not have one, I can take a back up, but this takes 15 monutes.

What I charge.

I charge £60 per hour (no VAT) and have a minimum charge of one hour.

This rate is for ad-hoc work, such as tweaks and fixes to existing sites.

£60 gets you two 30-minute blocks of my time.

If you want me to work on a project best handled by my agency, Toast, where I am the MD and have a bigger team, we will provide you with a full proposal.

New projects would typically include:

  • A new website
  • Significant development work (such as installing WooCommerce or creating new functionality).
  • Ongoing support (my agency provides maintenance and support for WordPress)
  • SEO work
  • Hosting

These types of projects would be quoted on a fixed cost against a fixed-spec.

If we have not worked together before, I may ask for payment upfront, after I have taken an initial look at your site.

£60 per hour is pretty cheap?

That depends, but I charge for my time.

  • If you want a 20-minute call to discuss your site, that’s chargeable.
  • If you want me to run reports and present findings, that’s also chargeable.
  • If you want to pick my brains about something, it’s also chargeable.

I balance a lower hourly rate with charging for all my time; after all, nothing is free.

You will not get charged an hours fee for 30 minutes work, so it’s transparent and fair.

I will send you an invoice for all work for your records.

Is there anything I do not charge for?
  • I don’t charge for a brief initial call or for reviewing your WordPress admin before I start work.
  • I don’t charge for preparing proposals and quotes (as that would be daft).
  • I also don’t charge for discussing new projects or work, but there is a fine line between discussing a project and providing consultation; if you want me to tell you how to do something, that’s consultation, if you tell me what you want, that’s a new project discussiion.
